Tragedy in New Orleans: Deadly New Year’s Attack by ISIS Sympathizer Shocks the Nation

In the early hours of January 1, 2025, New Orleans’ French Quarter became the scene of a devastating attack that claimed the lives of at least 10 individuals and injured over 30 others. The assailant, identified by the FBI as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar from Texas, drove a rented white Ford F-150 pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street.
After crashing the vehicle, Jabbar exited and opened fire on responding police officers, who returned fire, fatally wounding him. Two officers sustained injuries during the exchange and were transported to a local hospital.
The FBI’s investigation revealed that Jabbar’s vehicle contained an ISIS flag, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were discovered both in the truck and at other locations in the French Quarter. These findings have led authorities to treat the incident as a potential act of terrorism (FBI Statement).
Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas, had a history of minor criminal offenses, including a 2002 arrest for misdemeanor theft and a 2005 arrest for driving with an invalid license. He served in the U.S. Army for 10 years as a human resources specialist and an information technology specialist. Prior to the attack, he was reportedly experiencing financial difficulties related to an ongoing divorce (Wikipedia).
In response to the attack, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell labeled the incident a “terrorist attack,” and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry urged the public to avoid the French Quarter as investigations continue. The Sugar Bowl, scheduled for January 1 at the Caesars Superdome, has been postponed for 24 hours to allow for comprehensive security sweeps (NY Mag).
The FBI is actively investigating Jabbar’s potential affiliations with terrorist organizations and is seeking information from the public to determine whether he acted alone or had accomplices. Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward (AP News).
